Former President John Dramani Mahama has pointed at the president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, as cause of the recent violence by some final-year students.

He says when education is politicised, “the result is what we are seeing”.

For him, to refer to the current final-years as ‘Akufo-Addo graduates’ was the beginning of the troubles being recorded currently.

The unrests in some senior high schools including Ndewura Jakpa SHS and Tweneboa Kodua SHS has led to the Ghana Education Service (GES) meting out the heavy sanctions to students involved.

Some of them recorded a video to cast aspersions at the president.

“When you try to attach politics to education, this is what happens,” Mr Mahama said on Friday when he paid a courtesy call on the Paramount Chief of Dagbon, Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II.

He said since the advent of the Fourth Republic, no graduates have taken on the tag of the sitting president.

“Our children have been graduating from school for several years,” he noted.

“They are our children. They are our graduates. They are nobody’s graduates. When they were graduating in [Jerry John] Rawlings’ time they were not Rawlings’ graduates. When they were graduating in [John Agyekum] Kufuor’s time they were not Kufuor’s graduates. In [John Evans Atta] Mills’s time they were not Mills’ graduates. In [John Dramani] Mahama’s time they were not Mahama’s graduates. Today, they are nobody’s graduates.”

He said the next National Democratic Congress (NDC) government will restore “quality education”, a term which has eluded the current government.
